Pre surgery education at SMHEnhanced Recovery After Surgery Patient Education

At Sarasota Memorial, we believe an informed patient is an empowered patient. You play a key role in your recovery.

Knowing what to expect before, during and after surgery can help reduce anxiety, prevent complications, decrease recovery time, and make your hospital experience more comfortable.

What is Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)?

Your surgical team will provide you with the highest standard of care using an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery plan (usually called “ERAS” [ee-raz]).

ERAS is an evidence-based, patient-centered program developed to ensure patients’ successful recovery after a surgical procedure. Participants watch their free surgical education online, where they learn how to optimize their nutrition, breathing, and activity before surgery so that they can reach their post-surgical goals faster and easier.

ERAS helps get your body ready for surgery and then recover quickly by:

  • Providing you with education on what to expect before, during, and after surgery.
  • Getting your pain under control.
  • Allowing you to eat and drink as soon as it is safe.
  • Helping you get out of bed within 24 hours.
  • Decreasing how long you are in the hospital.

Click on the location where you are having your surgical procedure for your pre-surgical patient education video. Please watch as soon as possible if you are scheduled for surgery. You will enter your name and hit “Submit” to go to your video. Your surgical team is automatically notified when you are finished.

Note: Printing your ERAS information is not required. It contains the same information as your video and can be used for reference any time in your surgical journey.
