Orthopedic Surgery Support & Education
Joint Replacement Surgery Pre-Op Classes
When it comes to joint replacement surgery, each patient plays a key role their own recovery. To ensure surgery patients are well-prepared to participate in their care plan, the Sarasota Memorial Orthopedics team requires that patients having hip, knee or shoulder surgery must complete a Pre-operative Joint Replacement Education class prior to surgery.
The class, led by an Orthopedics Pre-op Education specialist, is currently offered in-person on the Venice campus, or online via an interactive, video-conferencing platform. The classes are held at various times throught the week to accommodate a variety of schedules.
The preoperative class will help participants:
- Prepare for surgery.
- Know what to expect during the hospital stay.
- Understand pain management options after surgery.
- Rehab therapy.
- Set post-surgery goals.
- Understand their discharge plan.

Joint repair / replacement surgery patients and their caregivers are strongly encouraged to also watch the below video, which has vital information related to patient discharge and post-op care at home. (Watching the discharge video below does not fulfill the preoperative class requirement.)
Spine Surgery Pre-Op Class
We encourage all spine surgery patients to attend a Spine Surgery Pre-operative Education Class. Now offered virtually, the interactive, online class teaches participants what to expect before, during and after spine surgery for the neck (cervical) and back (thoracic/lumbar). With this knowledge, you are better able to participate in your care plan.
Join our education specialist via video-conference for the 1.5-hour class; class times/dates vary.
