Newsweek Ranks SMH Among World’s Best Hospitals

Newsweek Ranks SMH Among World’s Best Hospitals

Wednesday, March 3, 2021

SARASOTA (March 3, 2021) – Sarasota Memorial Hospital was named one of the world’s best hospitals today in a global ranking compiled for the third time by Newsweek magazine.

SMH was one of 13 Florida hospitals to make the list, which spotlights 2,000 hospitals across 25 countries. Newsweek compiled the list in collaboration with global market research and consumer data company Statista Inc. Hospitals were selected based on medical performance indicators that included low mortality, complication and readmission rates, as well as recommendations from medical professionals and patient survey results.

“During a global pandemic, there is no better time to recognize our incredible physicians and staff for their dedication and unwavering commitment to provide world-class care to our community,” said Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder.

Newsweek compiles the list to help consumers discover the ways that leading hospitals — close to home and around the world — are shaping the future of medicine. Hospitals were selected based on numerous performance indicators, with the results validated and checked for quality assurance by a global board of renowned medical experts.

“As the events of 2020 made clear, our lives and those of our loved ones may rest on the kind of health care we have access to,” said Nancy Cooper, global editor-in-chief for Newsweek. “Of course, we hope that we — and you — won't need to seek care or visit a friend or family member in any hospital this year. But if you do, this ranking of the World’s Best Hospitals 2021 can help you feel confident as you make a critical choice about medical care.”

The global recognition follows SMH’s ranking among America’s 100 Top Hospitals and 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by IBM Watson Health, and its continuous 5-star rating from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
