Interventional Cardiology Specialists Join SMH’s First Physicians Group

VENICE, Fla. – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System welcomed 4 new interventional cardiologists into its First Physicians Group (FPG) network this month. FPG’s Interventional and Diagnostic Cardiology at Venice opened earlier this month in the new Medical Office Building on the Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice Campus.

Joseph Balzano, MDJoseph Balzano, MD, board-certified in cardiovascular disease, has been caring for patients in the Venice and Nokomis area since 2006, and in private practice since 1994. He earned his medical degree from University of Padua in Italy in 1984, before completing his residency in 1990 and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease in 1994, both at the Hackensack University of Medicine and Dentistry in Hackensack, N.J. Dr. Balzano specializes in catheter-based treatment of ischemic heart disease. He performs a range of cardiac services including vascular and endovascular medicine, cardiac and vascular ultrasound, cardiac stress testing, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, medical management of arrhythmias and permanent pacemaker implantation. 

FPG Dr Edmund BermudezEdmund Bermudez, MD, board-certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology, has been treating patients for more than 15 years. Dr. Bermudez earned his medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Mich., in 1995, and completed his internship at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minn. in 1998. He underwent advanced training in a cardiology fellowship at Brigham Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Boston, Mass. in 2002. Dr. Bermudez specializes in percutaneous treatment of complex coronary, structural heart and vascular disease. He performs a wide range of cardiac services including comprehensive echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, vascular and endovascular medicine.

FPG Dr. James Landis Jr.James Landis Jr., MD, board-certified in cardiovascular disease, treats patients with a wide range of cardiac needs including vascular and endovascular medicine, cardiac and vascular ultrasound, cardiac stress testing, nuclear stress testing, and echocardiograms. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Centros Estudios Technicos in Santo, Dominico, Dominican Republic in 1982 before completing his residency and a fellowship in cardiology at Hackensack University of Medicine and Dentistry in 1990 and 1993, respectively. Dr. Landis has been treating patients in the Venice area since 2004. 

Steven Shoemaker, MD, board-certified in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology, joins FPG’s team of interventional cardiologists having treated patients in Florida since 2009. He specializes in catheter-based treatment of coronary artery disease. Dr. Shoemaker earned his medical degree in 2001 from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., where he also went on to complete his residency in 2004 and then fellowship training in interventional cardiology in 2009. Dr. Shoemaker performs a range of cardiac services, including pacemaker and device implantation, cardiac and vascular ultrasound, stress testing and echocardiograms. 

FPG’s Interventional and Diagnostic Cardiology at Venice is accepting new patients at 200 Healthcare Way, on the second floor of the Medical Office Building, located on the Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice Campus in North Venice, Fla.
