Sarasota Memorial Radiation Oncology Center

Sarasota Memorial's new Radiation Oncology Center, part of the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute, is designated as a Gold Standard Radiation Oncology Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR), one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the U.S. The Radiation Oncology Center provides greater access to comprehensive cancer care and cutting-edge treatment for those in Sarasota and Manatee counties who are battling cancer.
Because cancer affects more than a patient’s physical health — it takes toll on mental and emotional health as well — the center was designed to deliver radiation therapy focused on the whole patient by integrating advanced radiotherapy technology with wellness features, such as a serenity garden and supportive services suite.
State-of-the-art Technology: The Radiation Oncology Center is equipped with Varian RapidArc TrueBeam linear accelerators, which are known as the gold standard in radiotherapy technology because they direct high-beam radiation with pinpoint precision. TrueBeam radiation therapy is faster and more accurate than other systems. For patients, that means a more comfortable experience and fewer side effects.
The Radiation Oncology Center has fully implemented Vision RTs AlignRT Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT). This advanced technology uses multiple cameras to create a 3D surface model of the treatment area by projecting a red-light pattern on the skin that acts as a virtual tattoo, eliminating the need for permanent marks that can be an unpleasant reminder of a patient's cancer treatment.
Brachytherapy: Our radiation oncologists will be utilizing high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatment for many prostate, cervical and endometrial cancers, as appropriate. Brachytherapy is a type of radiation therapy in which radioactive material sealed in needles, wires or catheters is placed directly into or near a tumor. High-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a newer, accelerated treatment, and compared to the traditional low-dose radioactive seed that remain in the body for an extended period of time, HDR can deliver equivalent doses of radiation in just a few minutes in a short series of two to four outpatient treatments. After each session, the radioactive source is removed from the body. Click here to learn more.

Care Beyond Treatment: During active cancer treatment, patients often delay self-care because they lack the time or energy. But making time for self-care supports overall health and wellness. At the Radiation Oncology Center, patients have on-site access to dedicated counseling, patient navigation, financial counseling and other support services. There is also a serenity patio that features a peaceful garden, soothing waters and inspiring messages for those battling cancer.
