Sarasota Memorial celebrated the groundbreaking of its first radiation oncology center today. Located next to Sarasota Memorial Health Care Center at University Parkway (5350 University Pkwy, Sarasota), the center will offer the latest radiation therapy and treatment technology in our community to target and treat individual cancers when it opens in the summer of 2020.
During today's groundbreaking ceremony, Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder; Chief Operating Officer Lorrie Liang; Chief Medical Officer James Fiorica, MD; and Cancer Institute Director Kelly Batista detailed Sarasota Memorial Hospital's efforts to address the rising number of people diagnosed with cancer along the Suncoast.
The Sarasota Memorial Radiation Oncology Center is one of two premier facilities that the healthcare system is beginning construction on this year as part of its evolving Cancer Institute and comprehensive cancer care program. The 17,000-square-foot Radiation Oncology Center will include:
- Two state-of-the-art linear accelerators for external beam radiation, designed to destroy cancer cells while leaving normal cells intact
- A CT simulator to define the location, shape and size of treatment area
- Integrative care services to support holistic patient care
- Radiation oncology physician offices
- Serenity Patio to promote healing and enhance patient experience

Flad Architects’ Tampa-based team designed the radiation oncology center, and Gainesville, Fla.-based Charles Perry Partners Inc. (CPPI) partnered with Sarasota-based Willis Smith Construction to build the treatment center.
Construction is slated to begin soon on the Sarasota Memorial Cancer Institute's facility on the main hospital campus. When complete, the Institute will be a center of excellence that provides services across the entire continuum of cancer care — from prevention, screening and diagnosis to treatment, clinical trials, and lifetime follow-up, survivorship care and support.
