As Sarasota Memorial prepares to open its new oncology tower next month, its Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute has appointed a leading GI oncologist to serve as its chief of surgical oncology: Kenneth Meredith, MD, a world leader in robotic surgery and the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.

Radiation can be a powerful treatment for breast cancer, but because it is so close to the heart and lungs, radiation oncology specialists at Sarasota Memorial’s Radiation Oncology Center are using advanced technology to make sure the treatment does not lead to other health issues in the future. Called Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT), the technology can be used to treat nearly every cancer type, but is especially useful when treating patients with breast cancer.

Despite challenges to supply chains and uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sarasota Memorial’s new oncology tower has crested its highest point — 233 feet — a construction milestone SMH leaders celebrated this week with inspiring messages of hope. Slated to open in the fall of 2021, the tower is the cornerstone of Sarasota Memorial’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute.
