Better Doctor Ranks SMH #1 in the Nation for Heart Attack CareHeart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. On average, 3 million Americans suffer a heart attack every year.

But Sarasotans can take heart: A national study of hospitals employing best practices ranks Sarasota Memorial #1 in the nation for heart attack care.

Sarasota Memorial earned the top spot in the BetterDoctor study because of its low mortality and readmission rates of heart attack patients and consistent use of best practices and standardized protocols for heart attack care. The list of “Best Hospitals for Heart Attack Care” published on BetterDoctor.com July 22.

David Patterson, Sarasota Memorial’s executive director of cardiovascular services, attributed superior patient outcomes to the high priority the entire team places on following best practices coupled with follow-up education and monitoring provided to every heart patient.

“We constantly strive to be better – our intense focus on quality is part of our culture – and it’s that unwavering commitment from our physicians, nurses and the entire team that results in great experiences and outcomes for our patients,” Patterson said.

The rating organization used Medicare data to compare hospital quality indicators across six categories: aspirin at arrival, time to an electrocardiogram (ECG), how many patients receive primary PCI interventions within 90 minutes of arrival (like angioplasties, stenting or atherectomies), door to diagnostic evaluation time, 30-day mortality rate from heart attacks, and 30-day readmission rate for heart attack patients.

“If you live near one of the hospitals on our list, you can feel good that you’d be receiving top care if you ever needed it,” the BetterDoctor study notes. “Many hospitals that did not make the top results are also very adept at treating heart attacks, however according to our measures from Medicare data, the ones we have listed stood out as the most high-performing in their treatment of heart attacks.”
