SARASOTA (July 25, 2014) – The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board voted unanimously today to select David Verinder as president and chief executive officer of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. David has been serving as interim CEO since former CEO Gwen MacKenzie's departure at the end of May.
David has been a key member of Sarasota Memorial's executive team for eight years. He first joined the organization as chief financial officer in 2006, when the hospital was experiencing significant financial losses and had been downgraded by bond rating agencies. By the time he was named chief operating officer four years later, Sarasota Memorial's finances were solidly in the black and the system earned bond-rating upgrades. The financial turnaround allowed Sarasota Memorial to embark on its long-overdue hospital campus improvement plan and construct a new nine-story Courtyard Tower.
As chief operating officer, David was in charge of the system’s operations and campus improvements, including the construction of the new tower, which was completed on time and on budget. He also spearheaded the health system's ambulatory strategy, expanding services and opening four new urgent care centers throughout the region.
David, 47, was chosen for the health system's top post following interviews with the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board and groups of physicians, staff and community representatives.
“It was clear from the outset that David has been instrumental in Sarasota Memorial's outstanding performance over the years and has the leadership, experience and vision to continue the organization's successful track record amid the challenges ahead," said Sarasota County Public Hospital Board Chair Marguerite G. Malone, EdD. "He has extensive knowledge of the hospital and the needs of our community. He's played a key role in developing and implementing strategies that have ensured the future viability of the organization and our ability to provide top-quality care."
Sarasota Memorial’s executive succession plan — developed several years ago to ensure a smooth transition during a change in leadership — called for David to step into the interim CEO role if the top executive left.
“Because David has played such a significant part in the organization’s achievements and in our succession plan, he was an extremely strong candidate and we wanted to consider him first,” said Dr. Malone.
Before he joined Sarasota Memorial, David served in senior leadership at Scott & White Hospital and Clinic, a 1,000-plus bed hospital system in Temple, Texas.
David earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Louisiana State University. He received his Master of Business Administration degree from Auburn University in Alabama.
A father of two daughters, both in high school, David has been married for nearly 20 years to Monica, a realtor and former marketing director.
“I’m honored the Hospital Board has placed its trust in me,” said David. “I’m excited to continue to work with such an exceptional, highly talented team of physicians and staff, and a dedicated Board that drives our mission. Sarasota is a fantastic community — my girls have grown up here — with residents that expect and deserve world-class care. My goal is to build upon Sarasota Memorial’s long tradition of excellence and provide the best possible experience to our patients."
