Heart Attack Risk

Don’t wait for warning signs to establish a healthy baseline. While some risks, such as smoking cigarettes or being overweight, are obvious. Others, including high blood pressure or high cholesterol, can have few visible signs or symptoms. Consider these disturbing trends:

  • One-third of all heart attacks occur in people with low risk
  • 50 percent of men and 64 percent of women who die suddenly of heart disease have no previous symptoms of the disease.
  • Two-thirds of teenagers have at least one risk factor for heart disease; many have a cluster of risk factors called metabolic syndrome, which greatly increases the risk of a later heart attack.

Take Charge of Your Heart Health
Whatever your age or current state of health, it’s never too late to take steps to protect your heart. It’s also never too early. And the sooner you act, the better.

Though the risks increase with age, the roots of heart disease can begin as early as childhood. Today, we’re seeing heart attacks strike men and women decades earlier – as young as their 30s and 40s – a byproduct of a more sedentary lifestyle of fast food and TV.

High blood pressure remains the #1 risk factor for cardiovascular disease, regardless of age. But the rise also is linked to a corresponding increase in a related trio of ills among younger adults: obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol.

Pay Attention to your Numbers – Focus on Prevention
The good news is that many risk factors are reversible; studies show that people well into their 80s can reduce their chances of dying from heart disease by nearly two-thirds simply by adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Sarasota Memorial’s Comprehensive Heart Screening will help you monitor and manage your personal risk factors. If your numbers are within normal limits, you have a good baseline for comparison as you get older. If your numbers put you at elevated risk for future heart disease, we can help you take important steps to manage your numbers and work with your health care provider to lower your risk.

The basic screening – a series of eight non-invasive tests – provides an efficient and cost effective way of assessing and monitoring your cardiovascular health. It is recommended for adults of all ages.

The screening includes:

  • Total Cholesterol
  • HDL Level (good cholesterol)
  • Lipid Profile, including LDL (bad cholesterol)
  • Triglycerides
  • Blood sugar
  • Lifestyle activity and exercise assessment
  • Weight and Body Mass Index

Once your risks are identified, a preventive program can be developed based on your individual needs.
