Founded in 1925, Sarasota Memorial has built a reputation for quality, safety and clinical excellence. Today, it remains the only hospital in southwest Florida with superior clinical outcomes that consistently place it among HealthGrades’ “America’s 50 Best Hospitals.”

Sarasota Memorial also has received the independent health care ratings organization’s highest honor for patient safety – the Patient Safety Excellence Award™.

Indeed, of approximately 5,000 hospitals in the nation, Sarasota Memorial is one of only 5 hospitals to achieve both awards 6 years in a row.

Why are ratings important?
Many hospitals and health systems claim to be among the best. That’s why, when choosing a hospital or health care provider, we urge people to rely on multiple sources of information – personal and physician recommendations, state and federal licensing agencies and reliable health care rating companies like HealthGrades® – to help you make informed decisions about where to seek care.

What is HealthGrades and what do the rankings mean?
HealthGrades is the leading health care ratings company in the nation, and the only one that evaluates hospitals’ clinical performance solely on objective patient outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications.

Each year, HealthGrades evaluates and recognizes hospitals’ performance in more than a dozen specialty areas. It also bestows three important “overall” awards to hospitals that demonstrate superior quality and safety.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in the Suncoast region (Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties) to receive all three:

50 best hospitals

1. America’s 50 Best Hospitals – Top 1% for Consistent Clinical Excellence
Based on the 2012 Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence study, HealthGrades spotlighted the 50 highest performing hospitals over the most consecutive years. Since its inception in 2007, Sarasota Memorial has been recognized as one of “America’s 50 Best Hospitals,” ranking it among the nation’s top 1% of hospitals for consistent clinical excellence.

2. Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence – Top 5% for Clinical Excellence
This prestigious distinction places Sarasota Memorial Hospital among the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for best overall clinical performance across 26 medical diagnoses and procedures the organization rates. The study evaluates hospitals solely on patients’ clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications and notes that Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence had a 30% lower risk-adjusted mortality rate among Medicare beneficiaries compared to all other hospitals.

3. Patient Safety Excellence Award - Top 5%
For the 9th straight year, Sarasota Memorial has been recognized as one of America’s safest hospitals based on HealthGrades' annual study measuring how well the nation’s hospitals prevent potentially avoidable complications and adverse events following surgeries and procedures. The 2012 study, which measures performance of 13 patient safety indicators (preventable hospital complications), including mortality, infection and bed sores, assessed millions of hospitalization records from the nation's nearly 5,000 hospitals using indicators developed by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, tracked trends in a range of patient safety incidents and identified those hospitals in the top 5% in the nation.

What does it mean for patients?
Simply put, patients are more likely to have successful treatment without major complications and lower mortality, on average, at top performing hospitals. In its patient safety study, nearly half of all patients experienced fewer patient safety incidents, on average, at top performing hospitals compared to poorly performing hospitals.
