At Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s Food and Nutrition Department, our mission is to foster a collaborative effort between health care professionals in order to optimize our patients’ level of care while serving attractive, nutritious meals to patients, staff and visitors.
Inpatient Clinical Nutrition Services
SMH’s clinical Registered dietitian team is dedicated to quality patient care by utilizing the most up-to-date evidenced based nutrition research, in order to provide the most effective Medical Nutrition Therapy to patients who require nutrition support and education during their hospital visit.
Team Mission: to provide exceptional patient care utilizing evidenced based Medical Nutrition Therapy as well as a caring and compassionate spirit; to be an advocate for nutrition initiatives within the healthcare system and local community; and be recognized by physicians and allied healthcare members for our expertise, professionalism, and dedication to excellence.
A physician, nurse or staff member can consult a dietitian at any time during the patient’s hospitalization if a nutritional need is identified. Any patient may also request to visit with a dietitian.
A registered dietitian can provide:
- Nutrition Assessments and Nutrition Care Plans
- Nutrition Education for Special Diets
- Tube Feeding and Parenteral Nutrition recommendations and interventions
Nutrition intervention has been proven to:
- Decrease length of stay
- Assist with improved patient outcomes
- Improve wound healing
- Identify and correct malnutrition
- Improve quality of life
- Assist with optimal food selection and supplementation
Patient Meal Services
Food and Nutrition Services strives for exceptional service by providing attractive, nutritious meals served by courteous staff. At Sarasota Memorial, patient meal service is a vital element to promote optimal nutrition and to encourage a timely recuperation.
Our service features:
Explanation of our menu ordering process to newly admitted patients, including the documentation of food preferences and special food needs. Daily chef specials are featured on our patient menu and alternate menu selections also are available.
A Gourmet menu is available for an additional charge.
Our patient menus are approved by a Registered dietitian to ensure nutritional adequacy and appropriate diet modifications. Each modified entrée is balanced to optimize flavor while adhering to nutritional restrictions.
Outpatient Nutritional Counseling & Coaching Program
Research has proven that many of today’s chronic health challenges can be influenced by what we eat, our activity level, and how we handle stress. There is also not a “one size fits all” approach … each individual has unique needs and requirements.
Whether your goal is to lose weight, address a health concern or simply live well… Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s Registered and Licensed Dietitians provide the education and support you need to achieve personal wellness goals. Services include education and individualized counseling for various health related concerns (obesity, hypertension, GI disorders, high cholesterol, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and more). We also offer nutrition coaching for sports nutrition, pregnancy, weight loss, and overall wellness coaching.

- Individualized nutrition & lifestyle plans
- Review of lab work
- Recipe and kitchen make-over’s
- Weight loss strategies
- Tips for healthy cooking, dining & travel
An initial session includes an assessment of food intake and supplements, lifestyle habits, past and present medical history, and activity level. Realistic and individual goal-setting is provided and your plan is tailored toward lifestyle and food preferences. Follow up sessions may be recommended to assess your progress and modify strategies as needed.

Outpatient Nutrition Services are provided on a fee-for-service basis. Visits may be covered by some insurance companies, if not, a 50% discount per visit applies.
