Heart Failure Center
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is the leading reason for hospital re-admission; however, the risk can be considerably minimized through patient education and outpatient monitoring. Sarasota Memorial’s Heart Failure Center team of nurse practitioners and cardiologist medical director monitor CHF patients for months – sometimes years – after they leave the hospital to make sure they understand and are able to follow the advice of their doctors. The team meets as needed with patients and provides education and an individualized plan of care that encompasses outpatient clinic visits, frequent telephone contact for symptom management and weight tracking; cardiac rehabilitation; and dietary and psychological consultations. Admission to the program usually follows a physician referral. For information, call (941) 917-7867. Click here to learn more >>>

Aquapheresis Therapy
Aquapheresis is a medical therapy designed to remove excess salt and water from hospitalized patients suffering from fluid overload, most often found in people with congestive heart failure. It is used primarily for hospitalized patients whose bodies do not respond to standard therapies, such as diuretic medications. Studies indicate that approximately 50 percent of hospitalized heart failure patients achieve fluid and weight reduction with diuretics. The other 50 percent do not. Up to 30 percent of fluid overload patients suffer from diuretic resistance.

Physicians specify and adjust the exact amount and rate of fluid to be removed from each patient, resulting in a safe, gradual reduction that has no significant clinical impact on blood pressure, heart rate, or the balance of electrolytes (chemical substances, such as sodium, potassium, and chloride) in the body. Aquapheresis therapy requires a doctor’s prescription. For information, please talk to your doctor or call our heart failure education nurse Susan Gaillard at (941) 917-2114.
