health & fitness?

Most health and fitness experts recommend light stretching before exercise to increase range of joint motion, reduce stiffness and reduce the risk of injury. There has, however, been some debate concerning the benefits of stretching before exercise. Some sources argue that stretching before exercise can lead to decreased muscle strength and lowered performance. A new study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise offers new insight into the debate. The results showed that short-duration stretching of eight minutes or less before exercise temporarily improved range of joint motion and did not significantly weaken muscles. Therefore, authors concluded that stretching prior to exercise does not have any impact on muscle strength and overall performance.

The exercise professionals at Sarasota Memorial's Healthplex can answer your health and fitness questions to assist you in meeting your goals. To learn more about our programs and services, we invite you to come by for a tour.
