Do you have a question about health & fitness?
Ask David - a Healthplex Expert: David-Flench@smh.com
The initial improvements that come from starting an exercise routine can be very motivating. Many people are able to improve their endurance, lose weight, and become stronger over the first 30 to 60 days of their workout program. However, after this initial period many people also experience the “exercise plateau effect” and become discouraged. To prevent the plateau, keep these three concepts in mind: consistency, intensity, and variety.
To stay consistent you should aim for at least 20-60 minutes of cardiovascular exercise on at least 3-5 days per week. For intensity, make sure you are using your heart rate training zone. A simple way to calculate this is to take 220 minus your age, and then multiply that number by 60% and 85% for the lower and upper ends of the zone. For a 40-year old, the heart rate zone would be 108-153. Incorporating variety in your routine will also help sustain improvements. To do this, cross train among a few different exercises so that your body does not adapt too much to one form of exercise.
The exercise professionals at Healthplex want to help you reach your health and fitness goals. To learn more about our programs and services, we invite you to come by for a tour. Visit www.SarasotaHealthplex.com or call (941) 917-7000 for more information.
Does Cancer Run in Your Family?
Find out if you’re at risk for hereditary cancer … and how to fight it.
Approximately 5-10 percent of all cancers are hereditary, meaning cancer develops due to an altered gene passed from generation to generation. The altered gene is present at birth and places individuals at an increased risk for certain cancers. It can be passed from grandparent to parent to child. Simple blood tests are now available to test for this altered gene, which allows those at risk to work with their doctors to reduce their cancer risk, detect cancer in its most treatable stages – or better yet, possibly prevent it from occurring at all. Testing can also help survivors protect themselves from new diagnoses of cancers. Most insurance plans accepted. Please call (941) 917-2005 to schedule a consult or for more information.
