Memory loss, disorientation, shaky hands, mood swings, depression and chronic boredom are often normal to the aging process. These behaviors, however, also can signal substance abuse problems in the elderly, a growing problem across the nation. Studies indicate that up to 70 percent of elderly hospitalizations for illness or injury are alcohol-based (compared to 25 percent for the population at large). Carol Colleran, executive vice President of the Hanley Treatment Center, will present “The Changing Face of Older Adult Addiction: From Lawrence Welk to Jerry Garcia,” a free community event for professionals and the public 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 19 in Sarasota Memorial’s first floor auditorium. CEUs are available to professionals for $10. Please RSVP to Miriam Lacher at Sarasota Memorial’s Bayside Center for Behavioral Health at (941) 917-1779. |
