  Be Safe This Summer
Summer is a time for enjoying outdoor pleasures, family getaways and good old-fashioned fun. Cookouts, warm weather, skimpy clothes – but the same things that make summer so relaxing make it prime time for injuries. Whether you suffer a seasonal mishap that justifies a trip to a walk-in center or a more serious accident requiring emergency treatment in a hospital ER, Sarasota Memorial has you covered. If you’re experiencing chest pain, impaired consciousness, bleeding that won’t stop or difficulty breathing, call 911 and get to the hospital ER as quickly as possible. For urgent but less serious conditions, such as ear infections, sprains, cuts, fractures and burns, visit one of Sarasota Memorial’s two urgent care Walk-In Medical Centers. Staffed by Sarasota Memorial’s board certified emergency, family and internal medicine physicians, the centers located in the north part of the county (University Parkway & U.S. 301) and in the Gulf Gate area to the south (U.S. 41 & Stickney Point Road), are open extended hours and weekends. Both offer the convenience of on-site radiology and laboratory services to ensure quick, complete diagnoses and treatments. Most insurance plans are accepted. Call (941) 917-1234 (University Parkway) or 917-5678 (Gulf Gate) for information.

Sarasota Memorial's
Healthplex Fitness Center

We all talk about “getting fit”, but do you know what type of fitness you want to achieve?

Aerobic fitness. Aerobic activities condition your heart and lungs. The purpose of aerobic conditioning is to increase the amount of oxygen that is delivered to your muscles, which allows them to work longer. Any activity that raises your heart rate and keeps it up for an extended period of time will improve your aerobic conditioning. Muscle strengthening. Stronger muscles can mean either more powerful muscles that can do bigger jobs (such as lifting heavier weights) or muscles that will work longer before becoming exhausted (endurance). Weight training (resistance training) or simple exercises such as push-ups are two examples of ways to focus on muscle strengthening.
Flexibility. Like aerobic fitness and muscle strengthening, flexibility is a result of physical activity. Flexibility comes from stretching and group classes like yoga.

Healthplex fitness experts recommend: Achieving a balance between the three is important because each contributes to total fitness.

Visit Sarasotahealthplex.com or call 941-917-7000 for more information on programs to fit your needs.

  Perfect Prescription For Weight Loss
Every person is different. Your weight loss plan should be, too. That's the basis behind Sarasota Memorial’s new Weight Management Partner Program, a completely customized eight-week program of diet, exercise and education. The medically supervised program uses SenseWear, wireless sensors to help monitor participants’ calorie intake and exercise output in real time, every day, so they learn not only how to lose weight, but how to keep it off. Each week, participants meet with a multi-disciplinary team of health and fitness experts to adapt the program’s weight loss strategies to meet their personal goals and make adjustments based on the previous week’s results. Sign up today for one of our next eight-week sessions starting July 21, or attend a free information session, 6-7 p.m. June 16, at the Institute for Advanced Medicine, 5880 Rand Blvd. (off Clark Road). For information, call (941) 917-4998.

Eating Healthy For Life
Sarasota Memorial also offers an ongoing four-week Eating Healthy for Life program focused on menu planning, grocery shopping and better choices to help address and manage weight issues. A healthy balance of one-on-one counseling and support group environments helps participants overcome emotional eating and other key barriers to successful weight management. The next sessions begin July 2 and Aug. 6. Register online or call our HealthLine (941) 917-7777 for more information.
