Think Stroke, Think FAST
Stroke is a medical emergency – just like a heart attack. Nearly two million brain cells die every minute following a stroke, so the sooner treatment begins, the more likely you are to protect yourself from serious disability. Fortunately, most ERs are equipped to administer the clot-busting drug t-PA – which can be an effective treatment if given within three hours of your first symptom. But if you miss that three-hour window, or need more advanced levels of care, it’s important to know that Sarasota Memorial is the region’s only state-certified “Comprehensive Stroke Center,” for people facing the greatest challenges in stroke care. May is Stroke Awareness Month, the perfect time to learn about the symptoms of stroke and how to react in an emergency. Join us for “Think Stroke, Think FAST,” a free educational event noon-3 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, in Sarasota Memorial’s first floor hospital auditorium, 1700 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Call (941) 917-7777 or register online. Ask us about our free FAST stroke magnets.

Perfect Prescription for Weight Loss
Every person is different. His/her weight loss plans should be, too. That's the basis behind Sarasota Memorial’s new Weight Management Partner Program, a completely customized eight-week program of diet, exercise and education. The medically supervised program uses SenseWear, wireless sensors to help monitor participants’ calorie intake and exercise output in real time, every day, so they learn not only how to lose weight, but how to keep it off. Each week, participants meet with a multi-disciplinary team of health and fitness experts to adapt the program’s weight loss strategies to meet their personal goals and make adjustments based on the previous week’s results. Sign up today for one of our next eight-week sessions starting May 19 or July 21, or attend a free information session, 6-7 p.m. May 26 or June 16, at the Institute for Advanced Medicine, 5880 Rand Blvd. (off Clark Road). For information, call (941) 917-4998.
