Every day, people across the nation are hospitalized with injuries or illnesses so debilitating, they cannot share important life decisions with their doctors. Learn how to advocate for yourself or a loved one by participating in the Sarasota and the nation’s first ever National Healthcare Decisions Day 2008. Local medical and legal bioethicist experts are presenting a FREE community event to answer questions and help educate people about how to complete reliable advance directives, living wills and ethical wills, how to appoint healthcare surrogates and proactively make other critical healthcare decisions, should they become hospitalized and unable to speak for themselves. The event is 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s first floor auditorium, 1700 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. To register, call: Sarasota Memorial HealthLine at 917-7777.

Stroke is the nation's leading cause of disability and the No. 3 cause of death. But recognizing the symptoms and knowing how to respond in an emergency can mean the difference between full recovery and permanent severe disability. Stroke victims who get to the hospital within 3 hours of their first symptom may be treated with the clot-busting drug t-PA, but too often, they wait too long or go to a hospital that lacks the specialists, equipment and organization to effectively treat them. Sarasota Memorial is one of only two hospitals in Florida – and the only one on Florida’s Gulf Coast – recognized as a “Comprehensive Stroke Center” and a preferred provider for people facing the greatest challenges in stroke care. To learn more, attend our free community and professional education event, noon-3 p.m. May 16, in Sarasota Memorial’s first floor hospital auditorium. To RSVP, please call HealthLine at 917-7777. |
